There comes a time in med school when one realizes....
- My non-med school friends are all earning a lot more than me who has negative income
- In fact, some of them have already been promoted multiple times, and will earn more than me probably for the rest of my life
- one of my friends is already a Senior Associate at largenamecompany
- They don't have to study when they get home after regular hours at work. aka they can enjoy time at home with loved ones.
- They don't have board exams every few years
- My friends are actually having babies (and uploading baby videos)
- ^And they are able to take time off or work at home to stay with their children (ok to some degree possible in med school too, but it's hard to get back)
But they might not realize the joy of helping someone who is sick to get better, or just been there for a concerned family. And seeing how vulnerable and weak we are as humans in this world, how our life is not in our control, how we should be thankful to be healthy, how we should be thankful for our family, how privileged we are. All these things and more, I'm thankful to be reminded everyday by my patients.
I don't regret the decision of coming to medical school.
But sometimes, there are shadows of doubts that linger...
